Where to Get a Great Coffee in Toowoomba
Good coffee in a regional city can be hit or miss. In Toowoomba, it’s mostly hit — and the scene has been quietly getting better for years. These are our favourites. Yes, we’re on the list. We’re biased and we’re okay with that.
The Baker’s Duck 124 Campbell St
We’ll start close to home. Just a minute from the CBD, we pour on locally roasted Six of One beans and cater to every milk preference — full cream, oat, and soy — with everything served in takeaway cups, including iced versions of the full menu. Hot chocolate and matcha are on offer too, and our cabinet is always stocked with freshly baked pastries and bread to go alongside your coffee.
There’s indoor and outdoor seating, and we’re proudly dog friendly — there’s a water bowl out front, and the outdoor seating is perfect for keeping your pup close while you grab your fix. Many locals make it part of their morning walk. Street parking can take a minute to find, but there are plenty of free spots tucked into the surrounding side streets. Worth the lap around the block, we reckon.
✦ Coming soon — 1 Railway Street
Banter Coffee Kitchen 229 Margaret St
Right on the main strip of Margaret Street, Banter is a casual spot with serious specialty coffee credentials. It consistently earns strong reviews, and coffee lovers who want to taste the full character of the bean will appreciate the filter coffee option on the menu. Easy to access and a relaxed place to settle in.
Sweet Talk Coffee 3/203 Margaret St
Sweet Talk is a proper “if you know, you know” kind of place. Tucked away in the CBD, it’s accessed via Chronicle Lane at the back — where you’ll also find parking. The fit-out is all exposed brick and minimalism, with a lovely courtyard for outdoor sipping. The coffee is great across the board, but it’s the creative menu that sets Sweet Talk apart. Think miso coffee and other inspired blends sitting alongside the classics.
Routine Espresso 122 Margaret St
For early risers, Routine is the answer. This spot opens at 5:30am on weekdays — one of the earliest in town — and sits right across from Queens Park, making it a genuinely lovely place to start the day. The baristas are warm and skilled, and the coffee lives up to the name: reliably excellent, every time.
Sage & Butler 62 Margaret St, East Toowoomba
Nestled in a leafy East Toowoomba corner, Sage & Butler has a relaxed neighbourhood feel. There’s indoor seating as well as an outdoor area shaded by a big old tree, and in the colder months the team puts out blankets for those who want to brave the fresh air. The full menu covers the classics plus matcha and turmeric lattes — a solid all-rounder.
Burrow 117A Bridge St, Mount Lofty
Burrow is one of those cafés that earns its reputation quietly and consistently. Tucked into a charming cottage in Mount Lofty, it has a warm, rustic fit-out with both indoor seating and a grassed courtyard out back. The coffee is well loved, the food menu is solid, and it’s one of the more dog friendly spots in town — puppychinos and babychinos are on offer, dog treats are often available for purchase, and the backyard gives your pup plenty of room to stretch out. A genuinely lovely spot for a slower morning.
Ground Up Espresso 501 Ruthven St
If Toowoomba coffee has an institution, Ground Up is it. One of the longest-standing cafés in the city, it has built a reputation over many years for consistently high-quality coffee and a menu that gives you plenty of reason to stay a while. The space has a great indoor dining area plus some outdoor seating, tucked into one of those spots that just feels like it’s always been there — because it pretty much has.
Six of One Coffee Roasters The Mills Precinct, 279 Ruthven St
Six of One is the source — and fun fact, they’re the same locally roasted beans we use here at The Baker’s Duck. A working roastery where you can actually watch the beans being turned and roasted in-store, it’s a genuinely cool experience and a must-visit for any serious coffee enthusiast. The retail offering is extensive too: multiple blends and roast profiles suited to various machines, available in 500g and 1kg bags alongside coffee accessories for the home setup. A café and a rabbit hole, all in one.
